What Is Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

Wisdom tooth extraction is a dental procedure that removes one or more third molars, commonly known as wisdom teeth. These teeth are located at the back of the mouth, with two on the upper jaw and two on the lower jaw.

In some cases, wisdom teeth do not have enough space to emerge properly, leading to impaction. Impacted wisdom teeth may cause discomfort, infections, or other dental concerns, often requiring removal by a dentist or oral surgeon. Some dental professionals recommend extraction even if no immediate issues are present, as wisdom teeth may contribute to complications later in life.

Why Remove Wisdom Teeth?

Potential Concerns Associated with Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Impacted wisdom teeth may be associated with problems such as difficulty cleaning the area, cavities or gum infections. Whether removal is appropriate depends on the position of the wisdom tooth, its condition and the individual's dental circumstances.

Pain and Discomfort

Impacted wisdom teeth may be associated with pain or discomfort in the affected area. A dental assessment is required to determine the cause of symptoms and whether extraction is appropriate.

Cleaning and Oral Hygiene

Wisdom teeth located at the back of the mouth may be difficult to clean, particularly when they are partially erupted or impacted. Your dentist can assess the position of the wisdom tooth and discuss appropriate treatment options.

Position of Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth may grow at different angles or positions and may be impacted when there is insufficient space for them to erupt normally. Your dentist can assess their position and discuss whether monitoring or removal is appropriate.

Wisdom Tooth Removal Types and Anesthesia Options

In a clinic setting, both non-surgical and surgical wisdom tooth extractions are performed using local anesthesia, with the dosage adjusted based on the procedure’s duration. General anesthesia and intravenous (IV) sedation are not available in clinics and are only offered in a hospital setting.

Non-Surgical Wisdom Tooth Extraction

A straightforward extraction is performed for fully erupted wisdom teeth that can be removed without surgery. The tooth is loosened with dental instruments and extracted without the need for incisions or stitches.

  • Anesthesia Used: Local anesthesia is administered to numb the area before extraction.

Surgical Wisdom Tooth Extraction

A surgical extraction is necessary for impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth that are trapped under the gum or growing at an angle. The procedure includes:

  • Making an incision in the gum

  • Sectioning the tooth if needed

  • Removing the tooth

  • Suturing the gum for healing

  • Anesthesia Used: Local anesthesia is used for most surgical extractions performed in a clinic. General anesthesia and IV sedation are only available in a hospital setting and may be required for more complex cases.

Potential Issues from Impacted Wisdom Teeth

If impacted wisdom teeth are not addressed, they may cause:

  • Tooth Decay – Trapped food and bacteria can lead to cavities.

  • Gum Infections – Difficulty in cleaning the area may result in gum disease.

  • Cyst Formation – Fluid-filled sacs may develop around the impacted tooth, affecting nearby teeth and tissues.

  • Damage to Adjacent Teeth – Wisdom teeth pushing against others may cause misalignment.

  • Pain and Swelling – Discomfort around the affected area may persist or worsen over time.
