Dental Crowns and Bridges

What Are Dental Crowns and Bridges?

If a tooth is weakened, damaged or missing, dental crowns and bridges may be considered as treatment options depending on the individual's dental condition.

A dental crown, also known as a tooth cap, is a restoration that covers a prepared tooth. It may be used where a tooth has been weakened or damaged.

A dental bridge is a restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth. Depending on the type of bridge, the artificial tooth or teeth may be supported by adjacent teeth or dental implants.

The type of restoration recommended depends on factors such as the condition of the affected tooth or teeth, the surrounding teeth and gums, and the individual's treatment requirements.

A dental consultation is required to assess the condition of the teeth and discuss suitable treatment options.

What Is a Dental Crown (Tooth Cap)?

A dental crown is a custom-made restoration that covers a prepared tooth. It may be used for a tooth that has been damaged, weakened or affected by decay. Dental crowns can be made from different materials, depending on the condition of the tooth and the treatment requirements. Each material has different characteristics, and your dentist can discuss the available options based on your dental condition.

Types of Dental Crowns

Metal Dental Crowns

Metal dental crowns are made from alloys such as gold, palladium, nickel, or chromium and may be used depending on the tooth and treatment requirements.

Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM) Crowns

PFM dental crowns combine the durability of metal with a tooth-colored porcelain exterior. These tooth caps provide a tooth-coloured appearance but may wear down over time, exposing the metal beneath.

All-Ceramic or Porcelain Crowns

Porcelain crowns may be considered for teeth where appearance is an important consideration. All-ceramic or porcelain crowns may be considered for patients with metal allergies.

Zirconia Crowns

Zirconia dental crowns are made from zirconia and may be considered depending on the treatment requirements. They are highly resistant to fractures while still while providing a tooth-coloured appearance.

Same-Day Dental Crowns

Some dentists use CAD/CAM technology to create same-day dental crowns, allowing patients to receive their tooth cap in just one visit.

Benefits of Dental Crowns (Tooth Caps)

  • Covers a Prepared Tooth – A dental crown is placed over a prepared tooth and may be used for teeth that are damaged, weakened or affected by decay.

  • Different Crown Materials – Dental crowns are available in different materials, including metal, porcelain, ceramic and zirconia. The appropriate material depends on the condition and location of the tooth and the treatment requirements.

  • Crowns on Dental Implants – A dental crown may be placed on top of a dental implant as part of the restoration of a missing tooth.

  • Teeth with Extensive Restorations – A crown may be considered for a tooth with extensive existing restorations or limited remaining tooth structure, depending on the dentist's assessment.

  • Custom-Made Restoration – Dental crowns are made to fit the prepared tooth. The dentist will assess the tooth and surrounding structures before determining the appropriate restoration.

What Is a Dental Bridge (Tooth Bridge)?

A dental bridge is a fixed dental restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth. It consists of artificial teeth, known as pontics, which are supported by adjacent teeth or dental implants, depending on the type of bridge.

The type of bridge and its design depend on the location of the missing tooth or teeth, the condition of the surrounding teeth and gums, and the individual's treatment requirements. A dental consultation is required to assess whether a dental bridge is suitable and to discuss the available treatment options.

Types of Dental Bridges

Traditional Dental Bridge

The most common tooth bridge, this design uses dental crowns on both sides of the missing tooth to anchor the replacement tooth in place.

Cantilever Dental Bridge

A dental bridge supported on only one side. It is less stable than a traditional tooth bridge but useful when there’s only one adjacent tooth available for support.

Maryland Dental Bridge

This tooth bridge uses metal or porcelain wings bonded to the backs of adjacent teeth instead of crowns. It’s mainly used for front teeth but is not as strong as other types of dental bridges.

Implant-Supported Dental Bridge

Instead of using natural teeth for support, this dental bridge is anchored by dental implants. It is an option for patients who are missing multiple teeth in a row

Benefits of Dental Bridges (Tooth Bridges)

  • Fixed Dental Restoration – A dental bridge is a fixed restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth.

  • Bridge Components – A bridge consists of artificial teeth, known as pontics, which may be supported by adjacent teeth or dental implants, depending on the type of bridge.

  • Bridge Design – The design of a dental bridge depends on factors such as the location of the missing tooth or teeth and the condition of the surrounding teeth and gums.

  • Materials – Dental bridges can be made from different materials. The choice of material depends on the location of the restoration, the condition of the teeth and the individual's treatment requirements.

  • Maintenance and Follow-Up – Dental bridges require appropriate oral hygiene and regular dental reviews. Your dentist can advise on cleaning and maintenance based on the type of bridge provided.

  • Suitability – A dental assessment is required to determine whether a dental bridge is suitable and to discuss the available treatment options.
