Treating Receding Gums with Soft Tissue Grafts: What You Should Know
A soft tissue graft, also known as a gum graft, is a dental procedure used to address areas of gum recession. When the gums recede and expose the tooth roots, this may be associated with tooth sensitivity and changes to the gum line.
EZ Dental Carea provides soft tissue grafting procedures at our Bedok North and Geylang Bahru clinics in Singapore. The suitability of the procedure depends on the extent and cause of the gum recession and the individual's dental condition. A dental assessment is required to determine the appropriate treatment option.
Why Gum Recession Happens
Gum recession can occur due to:
-
Gum disease
-
Brushing too hard
-
Aging
-
Injury
-
Misaligned teeth
If not treated early, it can cause discomfort, tooth sensitivity, and a less attractive smile.
How a Soft Tissue Graft Works
A soft tissue graft replaces or strengthens gum tissue. It helps to:
-
Cover exposed roots
-
Reduce tooth sensitivity
-
Improve the gum line
-
Prevent further gum and bone loss
Common types of gum grafts include:
-
Free Gingival Graft – Tissue from the roof of your mouth is added to strengthen thin gums.
-
Connective Tissue Graft – A layer beneath the palate is used to cover exposed roots.
-
Pedicle Graft – Gum tissue is shifted from a nearby area to cover the exposed root.
Soft Tissue Grafting Procedure
-
Preparation
The treatment area is cleaned before the soft tissue grafting procedure. -
Local Anaesthesia
Local anaesthesia is administered before the procedure. -
Graft Placement
Soft tissue is placed at the area affected by gum recession. Where clinically indicated, additional materials or biological agents may be used as part of the treatment. -
Protective Dressing
A protective dressing may be placed over the treated area following the procedure. -
Securing the Graft
The graft is positioned and secured with sutures. -
Healing and Follow-Up
The treated area requires time to heal following the procedure. Your dentist will provide post-treatment care instructions and advise on follow-up appointments where required.
